I was always fascinated with chameleons for the extremely long tongues and precision ability to catch prey with their skillful use of their tongues. Now, there is even more to be dazzled about by this amazing reptile's bag of tricks. Biologists and physicists from the University of Geneva found that the chameleon’s rainbow colored skin is covered by a thick layer of light-reflecting cells of nanocrystals. This is a must see video that explains the new discovery, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQggDnScsvI. The story was reported in Wired Science, http://www.wired.com/…/secret-chameleons-change-color-nano…/.
Why is this CSI and related to Intelligent Design? For CSI, see this essay, https://dennisdjones.wordpress.com/…/complex-specified-inf…/. The discovery is a springboard for bio-inspired nanotechnology to copy the natural nanotechnology of this reptile's skin. This study could lead to a natural method for developing materials, fabrics and surfaces to change color in response to external stimuli. The applications are unlimited. For example, any external surface, fabric, or finish could be textured in this color changing manner for maximum thermal efficiency.
